The short version

What is the Florida sales tax refund for home hardening?

In one sentence

Under Florida law (s. 212.08(21), F.S.), you pay sales tax on impact-resistant windows, doors, and garage doors, then apply to the state to get it back, up to $500 per home. It’s a refund you claim, not a discount at the register.

New for 2026 under HB 7031E (signed June 29, 2026), this pay-then-apply refund replaces the old 2022–2024 tax-free program. It runs on qualifying purchases made through June 30, 2029: real money back on an upgrade most South Florida homeowners are already planning.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Florida impact window and door sales tax refund automatic?
No. It’s a pay-then-apply refund, not a discount at checkout. You pay Florida sales tax when you buy the impact-resistant windows, doors, or garage doors, then apply to the Florida Department of Revenue afterward to get that tax back — up to $500 per property.
How much money can I get back?
Up to $500 per eligible property. The statute caps the refund at $500 of previously paid sales tax. Because Florida’s state sales tax is 6%, most whole-home impact window and door projects easily reach the $500 maximum.
Which products qualify for the refund?
Impact-resistant windows, doors, and garage doors that are rated for impact resistance and wind pressure under current test standards. Roofing is not included in this refund program.
Who is eligible?
The property must be a site-built home with an active Florida homestead exemption and a just (market) value of $700,000 or less. Each owner may claim the refund for only one eligible property.
When do purchases have to be made, and what’s the deadline to apply?
Qualifying purchases must be made between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2029. Applications are accepted by the Florida Department of Revenue from July 1, 2026 through September 30, 2029.
Is this the same as the 2022–2024 impact window sales tax exemption?
No. The 2022–2024 program was a point-of-sale exemption that ended June 30, 2024 — no tax was charged at checkout. This 2026–2029 program works differently: you pay the tax, then apply to the Department of Revenue for a refund of up to $500.
Where and how do I apply?
You apply directly to the Florida Department of Revenue. As of July 2026, the department had not yet posted the official 2026 application or TIP; check floridarevenue.com. You’ll need your itemized invoice showing the Florida sales tax you paid, plus proof of your homestead exemption.
Does Robson handle the refund paperwork for me?
The refund is claimed by the homeowner directly with the Department of Revenue — a contractor can’t file it for you. What Robson provides is a clear, itemized invoice showing the Florida sales tax line you paid on your impact windows and doors, which is exactly what the application needs.
Who is eligible for the home hardening refund?
The property must be a site-built home with an active Florida homestead exemption and a just (market) value of $700,000 or less. Each owner may claim the refund for only one eligible property.
When do the purchases have to be made, and what is the deadline to apply?

Where and how do I apply for the refund?
You apply directly to the Florida Department of Revenue. As of July 2026, the Department had not yet published the official 2026 refund application or Tax Information Publication; check floridarevenue.com for the form and instructions.
