Why the Door Is the Priority

The Opening That Takes the Hit

Your door is usually the largest operable opening in the wall, and in a hurricane it takes direct wind load. If a door fails or blows open, wind pressurizes the inside of the house, and an internally pressurized house is how roofs lift from within. The door is also the most common forced-entry point the other 360 days of the year.

Impact doors carry an NOA too. Here is how to read one. Open full size

A real impact door answers both. It's a whole assembly: laminated impact glass where there's glazing, a frame built for wind pressure, multi-point locking that grips the frame at the head, jamb, and sill, and anchoring tied into your wall to the NOA's spec. We install to that approval and the county inspects it.

We install PGT WinGuard, premium PGT WinDoor, locally built ECO Window Systems, and ES Windows, across entry, sliding-glass, and French configurations.

NOA & Florida Product Approval — and why locking matters as much as glass

A door is the opening that takes the most direct wind load in a storm, and it is the one most likely to be forced in a break-in. In the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, an impact door is only compliant when two things are true: it carries a current Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA) or Florida Product Approval rated for Large Missile Impact, and it is installed and anchored exactly the way that approval specifies.

The locking matters as much as the glass. Impact doors use multi-point locking: bolts that engage the frame at the head, jamb, and sill, not a single deadbolt, so the whole door edge is held against wind pressure and forced entry. We put the approval numbers on the permit, anchor to spec, and the county inspects it. If a door quote doesn't name the approved product and its NOA, you can't verify what you're buying.

HOA architectural review — what you'll need

Many Miami-Dade communities require architectural-review approval before you change a front door or enclose a patio opening. We give you the product specifications and NOA documentation your association will want to see. Because only you can act on your HOA account, you file with the association, and we equip you with everything the submission typically requires so it goes through cleanly. Start this early; HOA timelines, not ours, are often the real schedule constraint.

Common Questions

Impact Door FAQ

What makes a door 'impact' rated?+
A current Miami-Dade NOA or Florida Product Approval rated for Large Missile Impact, plus an installation that matches that approval. The door uses laminated impact glass where there's glazing, a frame engineered for hurricane wind pressure, multi-point locking that engages the frame at several points, and anchoring tied into your wall to the approval's spec. All four have to be right — and the county inspects the installation, because a rated door installed wrong is not a rated opening.
Why do doors matter more than windows in a storm?+
A door is usually the largest single operable opening in the wall and it takes direct wind load. If a door fails or blows open in a hurricane, wind pressurizes the inside of the house and can lift the roof from within — the classic failure chain. Doors are also the most common forced-entry point year-round. Protecting them with a properly anchored, multi-point-locked impact assembly addresses both the storm and the everyday security risk.
Which door types do you install?+
Three: impact entry doors (steel or fiberglass, for the front and side entries), impact sliding glass doors (2, 3, and 4-panel, including pocketing systems), and impact French doors (in-swing or out-swing, both-operable or one-fixed). All from approved lines — PGT WinGuard, the premium PGT WinDoor, ECO Window Systems, and ES Windows — matched to the opening and your budget.
Do impact doors help with insurance?+
They can. Protected openings are a feature on the wind mitigation inspection your insurer uses to set premium credits. Doors are part of the opening envelope, so protecting them alongside windows is what unlocks the stronger credits. We can't quote a specific dollar figure — that's your carrier's call — but keep your NOA documentation; the inspector will ask for it.
How long does an impact door project take?+
Plan on roughly 6 to 10 weeks from contract to final inspection, most of it manufacturing lead time on custom-sized approved units. The on-site install is usually a day to a few days per door system. Wider sliding-glass openings sometimes need a structural review, which we flag early so it doesn't surprise the schedule.
Do you handle permits and HOA approval?+
We pull and file the permit with the product approval numbers on the application, and schedule the county inspection. For HOA architectural review, we provide the product specs and NOA documentation you'll need to submit — but the homeowner files with their association, since only you can act on your HOA account. We'll tell you what they typically want to see.

Protect the Opening That Takes the Hit

Get a free, honest impact door estimate that names the approved product, the locking system, and the anchoring spec: entry, sliding-glass, or French.

What happens after you hit send

  1. We call you back. Someone from our office — not a subcontractor, not a call center — calls to confirm the details and, if you picked a date, whether that slot is open.
  2. We come out and look. The estimate is free and there is no obligation. We walk the roof or the openings, photograph what we find, and tell you honestly whether you need a repair or a replacement.
  3. You get it in writing. A written, itemized price. Permits, Miami-Dade NOA product approvals and HVHZ code compliance are included in it, never added on afterwards.

I was worried the paperwork would be a nightmare but they walked us through it step by step. … They replaced some rotten wood underneath and still finished on time. I feel much safer in the house now.
